Linking Child Development and Primary Care

Goals of the Project:

• Educate health care providers and ancillary staff on child development.
• Review and improve developmental screening to identify children at risk for behavioral, social, emotional and developmental problems.
• Educate parents of young children on their developmental needs – physical, social, emotional, behavioral and cognitive.
• Identify and organize resources in the community to support parents of young children.

Methods:

• Advisory Committee: Create a state advisory committee to oversee and advise the project
• Pilot Sites: Identify three community health centers and one behavioral health center to be pilot sites for the project.
• Child Development Expert: Contract with a child development specialist to provide training to health care providers and staff on child development.
• Parent Education: Identify parent education materials for use by community health center providers.
• Community Resources: Identify and organize community resources for parents of young children in pilot site communities.
• Learn from the Project: Evaluate all steps of the project; develop report documenting results including challenges and successes; make recommendations for state policy and for replication of the project.

Time Frame:

• Jan – April 07: Select pilot centers; create advisory committee; identify resources; contract with child development specialist.
• May – Sept 07: Implement project at pilot sites; training for providers.
• Oct –Dec 07: Continue implementation; document process and results.
