The West Virginia Healthy Kids and Families Coalition is a group of individuals, private organizations and state agencies working to improve the health of children and families in West Virginia. We provide a forum for diverse organizations to discuss, coordinate and collaborate on issues that improve the health and well-being of West Virginia children.

The Coalition conducts studies, convenes meetings and develops recommendations for public and private action.

The Coalition regularly issues reports and policy briefs related to the health and well-being of West Virginia children.

For the past eight years the Coalition has worked in West Virginia to support and promote health insurance coverage for West Virginia children. Its mission has to been to (1) promote coverage through CHIP and Medicaid, (2) reach out to families to enroll children, (3) support policies that simplify the eligibility and enrollment process, and (4) coordinate child health programs.

In 2007, the Coalition is reorganizing to emphasize its coordination mission. CHIP expansion to cover all children will still be a priority, but in addition, the Coalition will support and promote improvements in perinatal health, school health, oral health and address the integration of child development and primary care. The Coalition’s Agenda for Child Health can be seen here.

Special Projects for 2007
Linking Child Development and Primary Care

The WV Healthy Kids and Families Coalition is working with the West Virginia Primary Care Association on a special project to help primary care givers at all levels understand and apply the results of current research identifying factors that affect the health and well being of developing children.  Project staff will work with community health centers to provide education on child development for community health center staff, test new instruments that screen for developmental problems, and educate parents about child development issues.  A statewide Advisory Committee will direct the project and pilot its work through three community health centers.

The project is funded by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation
