PERINATAL WELLNESS PARTNERSHIP
GOALS FOR 2007
• Develop
a statewide perinatal system. Using technology, standard
practices of care and collaborative agreements among health care
providers, high quality perinatal care can be available to all
high risk pregnant women and new born infants regardless of
where they live in West Virginia.
• Increase
the number of obstetrical providers. The Perinatal
Advisory will identify financial incentives to support
obstetrical providers and nurse-midwives in shortage areas of
the state.
•
Encourage oral health care in pregnancy. Because
we now know that a pregnant woman’s oral infections can have an
effect on her baby’s health, both Medicaid and privately insured
pregnant women will be encouraged to seek and receive dental
care during pregnancy.
•
Seek alternatives to costly medical procedures.
Obstetrical health providers will study costly medical
procedures and provide information about alternative procedures
that are less costly and protect the health of mothers and
babies.
•
Develop a standard approach to identify and treat drug-addicted
pregnant women. Our Perinatal Wellness Study raised
concerns that the state’s neonatal intensive care beds (NICU)
are overflowing. Many medical providers believe this is related
to the increasing number of drug addicted newborn infants. The
Partnership will review legal and medical guidelines for
identification of a statewide approach to testing and treating
drug addiction in pregnant women.
•
Encourage worksite wellness. Established worksite
wellness programs will be encouraged to include education and
support for expectant mothers.
•
Support and promote breastfeeding. The partnership
will work to increase the number of lactation consultants that
work in West Virginia hospitals.
